Tebboune, Abdelmadjid

Tebboune, Abdelmadjid, 1945–, Algerian politician, president of Algeria (2019–). Under President Bouteflika, Tebboune held several ministerial posts, including that of communication and culture (1999–2000), local government (2000–2001), and housing and urban planning (2001–2, 2012–17). Briefly prime minister in 2017, he was elected president in 2019 following the ouster of Bouteflika. Although he ran as an independent candidate, his ties to Bouteflika and the military, led many antigovernment protesters who had sought Bouteflika's ouster to oppose his election.
