Win Myint

Win Myint, 1951–, Burmese lawyer and political leader. A member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), he spent a brief time in prison during the 1988 uprising against the military government. A close aide to NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, he was first elected to parliament in 2012. He served as speaker of the lower house of parliament (2016–18) before he was elected president in 2018, succeeding Htin Kyaw. Like his predecessor, he is largely a figurehead; real power is in the hands of Suu Kyi, who is barred from the presidency and serves as state counselor.
