Fitzpatrick, Sir Charles

Fitzpatrick, Sir Charles, 1853–1942, Canadian jurist, b. Quebec. He won renown as defense counsel for Louis Riel. In Wilfrid Laurier's government he became solicitor general (1896) and minister of justice (1902), resigning to accept appointment as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1906. After his retirement from the bench in 1918, he was lieutenant governor of Quebec prov. until his retirement in 1923. He was knighted in 1907.
