Valls Galfetti, Manuel Carlos

Valls Galfetti, Manuel Carlos, 1962–, b. Barcelona, Spain. After his family moved to Paris, he became a member of the Socialist party (1980) and a French citizen (1982). Valls was a Ile-de-France councillor (1986–2002), mayor of Évry (2001–12), and a member of the National Assembly (2002–12). A member of the party's right wing, he lost his party's 2011 presidential nomination to François Hollande but later became Hollande's campaign spokesman and served President Hollande as interior minister (2012–14) and premier (2014–2016). In late 2016 he resigned as premier to run unsuccessfully for the Socialist presidential nomination. After the election (2017) of President Macron, he left the Socialist party.
