Lytton, Victor Alexander George Robert Lytton, 2d earl of

Lytton, Victor Alexander George Robert Lytton, 2d earl of, 1871–1947, British diplomat, son of Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st earl of Lytton. He was undersecretary of state for India (1920–22) and governor of Bengal (1922–27). He achieved prominence as chairman of the League of Nations mission to Manchuria (1932); his report recommended in effect economic sanctions against Japan. Lytton's writings include a biography of his father (1913), Antony Viscount Knebworth: A Record of Youth (letters to and from his son, 1935), and The Web of Life (1938).
