Fenech Adami, Edward

Fenech Adami, Edward, 1934–, Maltese political leader, prime minister (1987–96, 1998–2004) and president (2004–9) of Malta. A lawyer, he joined the Christian Democratic Nationalist party in the early 1960s, entered the legislature in 1969, and served as party leader from 1977 to 2004. As prime minister, Fenech Adami overhauled the country's infrastructure and oversaw deregulation of its telecommunications, banking, and financial services industries and the privatization of state-owned companies. He also brought Malta into the European Union in 2004.
