Ribeiro, João Ubaldo

Ribeiro, João Ubaldo, 1941–, Brazilian journalist and novelist. His novel Sergeant Getúlio (1971, tr. 1978) narrates the efforts of a mercenary to deliver a prisoner in remote NE Brazil; it is notable for its violence and moral ambiguity. His later fiction includes The Lizard's Smile (1981, tr. 1994) and An Invincible Memory (1984, tr. 1989).
