Weah, George

Weah, George (George Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah), 1966–, Liberian soccer player and political leader. An outstanding striker, Weah was soccer's African, European, and World player of the year in 1995. He played with AS Monaco (1988–92), which won the French Cup in 1991; Paris-Saint Germain (1992–95), which won the French Cup and league title in 1995; AC Milan (1995–2000), which won league titles in 1996 and 1999; Chelsea (2000, on loan), which won the Football Association Cup that year; Manchester City (2000); Marseille (2000–2001); and Al-Jazira (2001–3). After retiring in 2003, Weah, who also had played for, coached, and help fund Liberia's national team, continued to coach and fund the team. As a member of the Congress for Democratic Change, he ran for president in 2005, losing to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and for vice president in 2011, when running-mate William Tubman lost to Sirleaf. Weah was elected to Liberia's senate in 2014. In 2018 he again ran for president and won, defeating Joseph Wakai, Sirleaf's vice president.
