English, Bill

English, Bill (Simon William English), 1961–, New Zealand political leader. First elected to parliament in 1990, English held several ministerial positions and served as leader of the National party (2001–3) before becoming finance minister and deputy prime minister (2008–16). During the world economic crisis, he worked to stabilize the country's economy. Following the resignation in 2016 of John Key as prime minister, English succeeded him and again became National party leader; in the 2017 elections, however, the National failed to secure a majority, and Labor ultimately formed a coalition government. English resigned from parliament in 2018.
