Pompeo, Mike (Michael Richard Pompeo), 1963–, U.S. politician and government official, b. Orange, Calif., grad. U.S. Military Academy, 1986, Harvard Law School, 1994. He served in the army as a cavalry officer (1986–91), then was a corporate lawyer, a founder of Thayer Aerospace, and president of Sentry International, an oilfield manufacturing and service company. A Republican, Pompeo served several terms (2011–17) as a U.S. representative from Kansas. Under President Trump, he became director of the Central Intelligence Agency (2017–18) and then secretary of state (2018–21). He was the chief U.S. negotiator responsible for arranging the 2018 meeting between Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un.
