Schekman, Randy Wayne

Schekman, Randy Wayne, 1948–, American cell biologist, b. St. Paul, Minn. Ph.D. Stanford, 1974. He is a professor (since 1976) at the Univ. of California, Berkeley, and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Schekman received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Thomas Südhof and James Rothman their discoveries concerning the regulation of vesicle traffic (a major transport system in body cells). Schekman's contribution was the discovery of a set of genes required for vesicle traffic. His work provided new insights into the highly regulated system that mediates vesicle transport, which has implications for a number of neurological and immunological disorders as well as diabetes.
