Kawasaki, Tomisaku, 1925–2020, Japanese pediatrician. He joined (1950–90) what is now the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, Tokyo, and became director of pediatrics there in 1973. In 1961 he encountered a a previously undescribed childhood inflammatory disease he called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, and after documenting 50 cases, he published (1967) a study describing the disease, now known as Kawasaki disease. He later founded and was director (1990–2019) of the Japan Kawasaki Disease Research Center.
