Côte d'Ivoire: Government

Côte d'Ivoire is governed under the constitution of 2016. The president, who is the head of state, is popularly elected to a five-year term; there are no term limits. The prime minister, who is the head of government, is appointed by the president. The Parliament has two houses whose members serve five-year terms. The Senate has 99 members; two thirds are indirectly elected by the regions and autonomous districts and one third are appointed by the president. The 255 members of the unicameral National Assembly are popularly elected to five-year terms. Administratively, the country is divided into 12 districts (subdivided into 31 regions) and 2 autonomous districts (Abidjan and Yamoussoukro).
