Migingo Islands

Migingo Islands, small, rocky islands in Lake Victoria, E Africa, off Kenya north of the Tanzanian border. The group consists of Migingo, Ugingo, and Pyramid Island. According to a boundary set by the British colonial powers in 1926, the islands are in Kenya, but the waters around them, which are rich in Nile perch and are fished by Ugandans, Kenyans, and Tanzanians, are claimed by Uganda. Some of the islands have been occupied at times by Ugandan and Kenyan police; in 2009 the two nations agreed that fishing could continue as usual until an independent survey determined the border.
