Sangay, active volcano, 17,343 ft (5,286 m) high, S central Ecuador. A symmetrical, glacier-capped, cone-shaped stratovolcano at the edge of the Amazon rainforest, it is the most active volcano in Ecuador, having erupted continually since 1934, but it is relatively remote from human settlement. The modern volcano lies with the calderas of two ancient ones, both of which catastrophically collapsed to the east. Sangay was first scaled by R. T. Moore in 1929.
