Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island, island, c.1,700 sq mi (4,400 sq km), S Australia, in South Australia at the entrance to Gulf St. Vincent. It is 93 mi (150 km) long and 35 mi (57 km) wide. The chief products are barley, sheep, salt, gypsum, and eucalyptus oil. There are many summer resorts. Kingscote (2016 pop. 1,826) is the principal settlement. In the southwest is Flinders Chase National Park, with native flora and fauna; it and other protected areas, mainly in the west and south, cover more than a third of the island. Wildfires in the island's west and center in 2019–2020 scorched nearly the half its area.
