Son of silent-film actor Roy Redgrave, Michael Redgrave had a prodigious career in theater and film, including acting, directing, and producing. His stage performances include Uncle Vanya, As You Like It and Hamlet. He made a striking film debut as the musician in the Hitchcock thriller The Lady Vanishes (1938) then went on to make Dead of Night (1945) and The Browning Version (1951). He took a comic turn in the title role of The Importance of Being Ernest (1952) and was nominated for an Oscar for his part in Mourning Becomes Electra (1947). Redgrave was the father of actors Vanessa, Lynn, and Corin.
