The daughter of a singing clown in the Barnum & Bailey Circus, Burke began acting at a young age and starred in a dozen silent films. She married Florenz Ziegfeld in 1914; after his death she devoted more time to her film career, appearing in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942), Father of the Bride (1950), Father's Little Dividend (1951), and many other films. But she is best-remembered for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz (1939).
