His low-budget debut film, The Brothers McMullen (1995), about the lives and loves of three Irish-American brothers, was the surprise hit of the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prize. His 1996 romatic-comedy follow-up, She's the One, retained much of the same previously unknown cast. He co-starred in Saving Private Ryan (1998) and No Looking Back (2000).
