Eldridge Reeves Johnson

Birthplace: Wilmington, Del.

Based on the strength of his invention of a spring-driven gramophone motor (1896), Johnson founded the Victor Talking Machine Company (1901). The slogan “His Master's Voice,” which featured a dog listening intently to a gramophone, became the company's logo in 1901 and was recognized around the world. The company faltered in the 1920s, and was acquired by Radio Corporation of America in 1929 to became RCA Victor, and Nipper the dog (and logo) came along.
