The daughter of a Yugoslavian father and a Russian mother, Milla Jovovich moved to the United States in 1981 from the Ukraine. Beginning to model by the age of nine, by twelve she was named one of Revlon's “Most Unforgettable Women in the World.” She began acting, appearing in Two-Moon Junction (1988), which led to a starring role in Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991). Her disappointment with subsequent small roles in such movies as Kuffs (1992) and Dazed and Confused (1993), led her to stop acting for a time. Jovovich returned to the big screen in Fifth Element (1997) and also appeared in He Got Game (1998), as Joan of Arc in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) and as Alice in the Resident Evil series (2002, 2004, 2007). Also a singer and songwriter, in 1994 Jovovich released Milla: The Divine Comedy. She married Fifth Element and The Messenger director Luc Besson in 1997 but filed for divorce in 1999.
