Birthplace: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Verhoeven began his career making documentaries for the Netherlands navy. He soon gained success in directing for TV, and his Dutch feature films, such as Turkish Delight (1973), earned international notice. He moved to the United States in the 1980s and directed the box-office hits Robocop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), and Starship Troopers (1997). He hopes to strike gold again with the summer 2000 release of another of his science fiction specialties, The Hollow Man. Verhoeven is not related to the German actor of the same name.
