Daniel TURNER, Congress, NC (1796-1860)

TURNER, Daniel, (son of James Turner), a Representative from North Carolina; born near Warrenton, Warren County, N.C., September 21, 1796; completed preparatory studies; was graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1814, and commissioned second lieutenant of Artillery the same year; served in the War of 1812 as acting assistant engineer; resigned his commission May 17, 1815; student for two years at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.; moved to North Carolina; member of the North Carolina house of commons 1819-1823; elected to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829); was not a candidate for renomination; principal of the Warrenton (N.C.) Female Seminary; superintending engineer of the construction of public works at the Mare Island (Calif.) Navy Yard from September 16, 1854, until his death there July 21, 1860; interment in Mare Island Naval Cemetery.
