LOCKE, Francis, (nephew of Matthew Locke), a Senator from North Carolina; born in Rowan County, N.C., October 31, 1776; attended Zion-Parnassus Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; studied law; admitted to the bar and practiced; elected judge of the superior court of North Carolina in 1803 and served until 1814, when he resigned; elected to the United States Senate in 1814 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of David Stone, but resigned December 5, 1815, without having qualified; died in Rowan County, N.C., on January 8, 1823; interment in the Thyatira Churchyard, near Salisbury, N.C.
