Franklin MENGES, Congress, PA (1858-1956)
MENGES, Franklin, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born at Menges Mills, York County, Pa., October 26, 1858; attended the public schools in North Codurus Township, York County, Pa., and Baugher Academy Preparatory School, Hanover, Pa.; was graduated from Gettysburg (Pa.) College in 1886; instructor in chemistry and physics at that college 1886-1896; head of the science department of York High School 1897-1903; lecturer at farmersâ institutes in Pennsylvania and other States 1898-1918; represented the Pennsylvania State Agriculture Department at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at the Worldâs Fair in 1904; made a soil survey of the State of Pennsylvania; author of numerous articles on scientific agriculture; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth, Seventieth, and Seventy-first Congresses (March 4, 1925-March 3, 1931); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1930 to the Seventy-second Congress; engaged in agricultural pursuits on his farm near York, Pa., until his retirement in 1947; moved to Arlington, Va., where he died May 12, 1956; interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa.
