John HAILEY, Congress, ID (1835-1921)
HAILEY, John, a Delegate from the Territory of Idaho; born in Smith County, Tenn., August 29, 1835; attended the common schools; moved in 1848 to Missouri with his parents, who settled in Dade County; crossed the plains to Oregon in 1853; enlisted as a private on the outbreak of the Rogue River Indian War in 1855 and subsequently promoted to lieutenant; moved to Idaho in 1862; engaged in agricultural pursuits, stock raising, and mining; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1874; member of the Territorial council of Idaho in 1880 and served as its president; elected to the Forty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1887); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1886 to the Fiftieth Congress; appointed warden of the Idaho Penitentiary in 1899; died in Boise, Idaho, April 10, 1921; interment in the Masonic Cemetery.
