John Jones MILLIGAN, Congress, DE (1795-1875)

MILLIGAN, John Jones, a Representative from Delaware; born at Bohemia Manor, Cecil County, Md., December 10, 1795; attended Wilmington Academy and St. Mary’s College, Baltimore, Md., and was graduated from Princeton College in 1814; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in New Castle County, Del., in 1818; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Congresses, and reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1831-March 3, 1839); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1838 to the Twenty-sixth Congress; appointed judge of the state superior court on September 19, 1839, and served until September 16, 1864, when he resigned; died in Philadelphia, Pa., April 20, 1875; interment in Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery, Wilmington, Del.
