John Nevett STEELE, Congress, MD (1796-1853)

STEELE, John Nevett, a Representative from Maryland; born in Weston, Dorchester County, Md., February 22, 1796; resided on an estate called “Indian Town,” near Vienna, Md.; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced practice in Dorchester County, Md.; member of the State house of delegates 1822-1824, 1829, and 1830; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Littleton P. Dennis; reelected to the Twenty-fourth Congress and served from May 29, 1834, to March 3, 1837; unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor of Maryland in 1838; engaged in agricultural pursuits; died in Cambridge, Md., August 13, 1853; interment in Christ Protestant Episcopal Church Cemetery.
