JACKSON, Oscar Lawrence, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pa., September 2, 1840; attended the common schools, Tansy Hill Select School, and Darlington Academy; taught school in Hocking County, Ohio; served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865; entered as captain of Company H, Sixty-third Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and received promotions of major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel by brevet; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced practice in New Castle, Pa.; district attorney 1868-1871; member of the commission to codify laws and devise a plan for the government of cities of Pennsylvania in 1877 and 1878; elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1888 to the Fifty-first Congress; resumed the practice of law in New Castle, Pa.; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1896; died in New Castle, Pa., on February 16, 1920; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
