Richard Irvine MANNING, Congress, SC (1789-1836)

MANNING, Richard Irvine, a Representative from South Carolina; born near Sumter, Sumter District, S.C., May 1, 1789; attended private schools and was graduated from South Carolina College at Columbia in 1811; served as captain of Volunteers in the War of 1812; engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of representatives 1820-1822; served in the State senate 1822-1824; Governor of South Carolina 1824-1826; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1826 to the Twentieth Congress; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Blair; reelected to the Twenty-fourth Congress and served from December 8, 1834, until his death in Philadelphia, Pa., May 1, 1836; interment in Trinity Churchyard, Columbia, Richland County, S.C.
