Walter Duncan McINDOE, Congress, WI (1819-1872)

McINDOE, Walter Duncan, a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland, March 30, 1819; immigrated to the United States in 1834; engaged in business in New York, Charleston, and St. Louis; finally settled in Wisconsin in 1845 and engaged in the lumber business; member of the State assembly in 1850, 1854, and 1855; unsuccessful candidate for gubernatorial nomination in 1857; provost marshal of Wisconsin during the Civil War; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Luther Hanchett; reelected to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses and served from January 26, 1863, to March 3, 1867; chairman, Committee on Revolutionary Pensions (Thirty-ninth Congress); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1866; resumed his interests in the lumber business; died in Wausau, Marathon County, Wis., on August 22, 1872; interment in Pine Grove Cemetery.
