Lewis Carroll was the church deacon and mathematician who wrote the famous fantasy books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (published in 1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass (1871). Originally conceived as nursery tales for the daughter of family friends, they quickly became classics of children's literature. Lewis Carroll also wrote light verse, including "The Hunting of the Snark."
