Wappers, Gustave, Baron güstävˈ bärôNˈ väpĕrsˈ, väpˈərs [key], 1803–74, Belgian historical and genre painter. For many years director of the Antwerp Academy, he introduced the romantic school into Belgium. The last 15 years of his life were spent in Paris. His most famous work is Episode of the Belgian Revolution of 1830 (Brussels).
