Carstens, Asmus Jacob
Carstens, Asmus Jacob äs´mo͝os yä´kôp kär´stəns [key], 1754–98, German historical painter and engraver, b. Schleswig. He studied in Copenhagen and in Italy. He was influenced by the work of Giulio Romano. Carstens was a popular professor at the Berlin Academy where, through such pupils as Peter von Cornelius, he had a great influence on German historical painting. Homer Singing is a characteristic work.
