Beauharnois, Charles de la Boische, marquis de

Beauharnois, Charles de la Boische, marquis de shärl də lä bwäsh märkēˈ də bōärnwäˈ [key], 1670–1749, French governor of New France (1726–46). Despite the loss (1745) of Louisburg to the British, which led to his replacement, Beauharnois's rule was generally peaceful and prosperous. He returned (1747) to France and served as a naval official.
