Arboleda, Julio

Arboleda, Julio ho͞oˈlyō ärbōlāˈᵺä [key], 1817–61, Colombian poet and politician. A powerful political force, he was for a time imprisoned and then exiled. He returned to lead a revolt (1860) against Mosquera, was named president, but shortly thereafter was assassinated. He is best known as the author of the unfinished poem Gonzalo de Oyón, an epic of the Spanish conquest.
