Dieskau, Ludwig August, Baron

Dieskau, Ludwig August, Baron lo͞otˈvĭkh ouˈgo͞ost bärōnˈ dēˈskou [key], 1701–67, French general in the French and Indian Wars. In 1755 he was sent to take command of French troops in America. He led them and their Native American allies in an attack against British and colonial forces at Lake George and was defeated by the British commander Sir William Johnson. Dieskau was captured but was exchanged in 1763.
