Nicolai, Otto

Nicolai, Otto ô´tō nēkōlä´ē, nē´kōlī [key], 1810–49, German composer. His opera Il Templario (1840), after Scott's Ivanhoe, was successful, but his masterpiece was the comic opera The Merry Wives of Windsor (1849). He led (1842–47) the Philharmonic Concerts, Vienna (now the Vienna Philharmonic), for the purpose of presenting adequate performances of Beethoven's music.
