Lidman, Sara

Lidman, Sara säˈrä lēdˈmän [key], 1923–2004, Swedish writer. Her novels The Tar Still (1953), Cloudberry Land (1955), and The Rain Bird (1958, tr. 1962), treating rural life in N Sweden, established her reputation as a major writer. After traveling in Africa in 1960, she wrote My Son and I (1961) and With Five Diamonds (1964); a later visit to North Vietman brought Conversations in Hanoi (1966), a work of reportage. Returning to Norrland, she wrote another novel series, including Thy Servant Is Listening (1977), The Iron Crown (1985), and Naboth's Stone (1989).
