Medina, Danilo Sánchez

Medina, Danilo Sánchez dänēˈlō mĕdēˈnä sänˈchās [key], 1951–, Dominican political leader. A member of the Dominican Liberation party, he was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1986, served as its president (1994–95), and was then chief of staff (1996–2000, 2004–6) for President Leonel Fernández Reyna. Medina ran unsuccessfully for president in 2000 before winning the office in 2012. Although he raised taxes and university fees, Medina remained popular by improving the country's infrastructure and educational opportunities and creating jobs, especially in the tourism industry; he won a second term in 2016.
