Lamballe, Marie Thérèse Louise de Savoie-Carignan, princesse de märēˈ tārĕzˈ lwēz də sävwä-kärēnyäNˈ, prăNsĕsˈ də läNbälˈ [key], 1749–92, devoted friend and favorite of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Extremely unpopular, she was killed by a mob during the French Revolution in the September massacres (1792), and her head was displayed on a pike under the queen's windows.
