Tangshan

Tangshan täng-shän [key], city (1994 est. pop. 1,110,200), NE Hebei prov., China. A coal-mining center in the Kailan basin, Tangshan is a major industrial hub with iron- and steelworks that make it the country's most important steel-producing hub. Its manufactures also include machinery, motor vehicles, chemicals, textiles, glass, petroleum products, and cement. It was completely destroyed by a massive earthquake on July 28, 1976, in which more than 250,000 people are estimated to have been killed. Tangshan has since been completely rebuilt.
