Denizli dĕnēzlē´ [key], city (1990 pop. 203,130), capital of Denizli prov., W Turkey. Picturesquely situated, it is an agricultural market center and the gateway for excursions by tourists to the nearby ruins of Laodicea at Lycum and Hierapolis . The city was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1389. It was badly damaged by earthquakes in 1710 and 1899.
