Písek

Písek pēˈsĕk [key], city (1991 pop. 29,550), SW Czech Republic, in Bohemia, on the Otava River. It has tobacco, paper, and textile industries. Písek was founded in the 13th cent. and later suffered heavily in the Thirty Years War (1618–48). The city has a 13th-century palace, a 14th-century stone bridge (the oldest in the Czech Republic), and several Gothic churches.
