De Pauw, Washington Charles

De Pauw, Washington Charles dĭpôˈ [key], 1822–87, American manufacturer, b. Salem, Ind. At first successful at banking, he later established a plate-glass works at New Albany, Ind., which became one of the largest plants in the country. He donated some $300,000 to Indiana Asbury College, which was renamed (1884) DePauw Univ.
