Born: 1877

Clark and his wife, Francine Clary Clark, became well-known collectors of Old Masters and 19th century paintings. As heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune (his grandfather was Isaac Singer's partner, Edward Clark), Clark studied at Yale and served in the army before marrying in Paris in 1919. The couple moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts where they established the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in 1955, beneath whose front steps both are buried.
