YATES, Abraham, (uncle of Peter Waldron Yates), a Delegate from New York; born in Albany, N.Y., August 23, 1724; completed preparatory studies; sheriff of Albany County 1755-1759; deputy to the Provincial Convention in 1775; delegate to the Provincial Congress 1775-1777, and served as president pro tempore of that body November 2, 1775, August 10, 1776, and as president August 28, 1776; member of the council of appointment in 1777; member of the first and second councils of safety May 3, 1777, to January 7, 1778; served in the State senate 1778-1790; receiver of Albany in 1778 and 1779; first postmaster of Albany in 1783; Member of the Continental Congress in 1787 and 1788; mayor of Albany 1790-1796; died in Albany, N.Y., June 30, 1796; interment in Albany Rural Cemetery.
