NEWMAN, Alexander, a Representative from Virginia; born near Orange, Va., on October 5, 1804; pursued an academic course; held several local offices; member of the State house of delegates 1836-1838; served in the State senate 1841-1846; postmaster of Wheeling, Va. (now West Virginia), from April 2, 1846, to March 2, 1849, when he resigned; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress and served from March 4, 1849, until his death, before the assembling of Congress, while on a visit to Pittsburgh, Pa., September 8, 1849; interment in the Old First Street Cemetery, Moundsville, W.Va.
