KNAPP, Charles, (father of Charles Junius Knapp), a Representative from New York; born in Colchester, Delaware County, N.Y., October 8, 1797; educated at home and later attended the common schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; taught school in Delaware County; engaged in mercantile pursuits in 1825; member of the State assembly in 1841; moved to Deposit, Delaware County, N.Y., in 1848 and organized a bank in 1854 and subsequently became its president; elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress (March 4, 1869-March 3, 1871); was not a candidate for renomination in 1870; resumed banking; died in Deposit, N.Y., on May 14, 1880; interment in Laurel Bank Cemetery.
