Chittenden LYON, Congress, KY (1787-1842)

LYON, Chittenden, (son of Matthew Lyon), a Representative from Kentucky; born in Fair Haven, Vt., February 22, 1787; attended the common schools; in 1801 moved to Kentucky with his parents, who settled in Caldwell County; engaged in mercantile pursuits in Eddyville, Caldwell County, Ky., and had large agricultural interests; member of the State house of representatives 1822-1824; served in the State senate 1827-1835; elected to the Twentieth Congress and reelected as a Jacksonian to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1835); was not a candidate for reelection in 1835 to the Twenty-fourth Congress; continued his business activities until his death; Lyon County, which was separated from Caldwell County in 1854, was named in his honor; died in Eddyville, Ky., November 23, 1842; interment in Eddyville Cemetery.
